Legislation - Refugees / asylum seekers

In the area of refugees and asylum seekers the Refugee Act, 1996 is the principal piece of domestic legislation dealing with refugees and asylum seekers. The 1996 Act has been amended by the Immigration Act, 1999, the Illegal Immigrants (Trafficking) Act, 2000 and the Immigration Act, 2003 and 2004. The Refugee Act, 1996 (as amended in 1999, 2000 and 2003) provides for a statutory system for processing applications for refugee status and includes the establishment of two new independent statutory offices: the Refugee Applications Commissioner and the Refugee Appeals Tribunal.
