The European Union has been an important influence in the area of anti-discrimination and equality legislation. The Equality Authority was set up as an independent body in 1999 under the terms of Employment Equality Act, 1998 and is an independent body. The Employment Equality Act, 1998 came into force on the 18th October 1999, and was amended on the 25th October 2004 by the Equality Act, 2004; now known as The Employment Equality Acts, 1998 and 2004. The Equal Status Act, 2000 came into force on the 25th October 2000. It was amended by the Equality Act, 2004 on the 19th July 2004, now known as The Equal Status Acts, 2002 to 2004. The Acts deal with discrimination related to any of the following nine grounds: gender, marital status, family status, age, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, membership of the Traveller Community.
