Are social workers required to obtain professional registration?

Currently the social work profession is not subject to registration. At the moment there is a system of recognition of qualifications, administered by the National Social Work Qualifications Board. However, the section on "The Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005" ( Section 3 ) provides information on the statutory registration system that will come into effect in the near future.

Is there a professional social work organisation?

The Irish Association of Social Workers (IASW) is the professional association for social workers in Ireland. It functions on both a regional and a special interest group basis.

Is there a trade union for social workers?

IMPACT is a trade union for the public sector generally, including social workers. It has a national vocational group for social workers and community workers.

What is the social worker salary?

Social worker salaries are fixed on scales depending on grade, area of work and length of professional experience. When a position is advertised, enquiries can be made to the prospective employer about the scale applicable to the post. IMPACT and the relevant government department can provide general information on salary scales.
